Welcome to Year 3
We will be starting this term with a topic based on Ted Hughes novel "The Iron Man".
In English, we will read the novel and a poem "The Coming of the Iron Man" by Brenda Williams. Children will have the opportunity to write their own poem. We will read and discuss the novel, which is about what happens when a young boy befriends a robot. The children will write letters and stories related to the novel. Our grammar focus will be on using conjunctions (when/as/if/because/until/before/after/while) to extend sentences.
Handwriting will be a big focus this term. Many children are now beginning to develop a joined up style but we want to encourage them to present their work as neatly as possible. We will be introducing rewards for those who make continued effort with their handwriting and we encourage you to support your children with practising their handwriting at home when possible.
In Maths, we will be finishing our work on written addition and subtraction and moving on to multiplication and division. Our first focus will be on multiplying and dividing by 3,4 and 8 and learning the relevant times tables. It is important that children are able to learn these tables by heart and recall facts quickly. We will move on to multiplying and dividing 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers.
Where possible, we have linked our other subjects to our topic of the Iron Man. In Science, we will be learning about magnets and metals. In geography, we will be using map skills in relation to the local area. We will look for local waste and recycling sites and find out why recycling is important for the environment. In RE, our focus for the first half term is on Judaism where we will learn about the Jewish religious book, the Torah. In ICT, we are learning to use simple spreadsheets. This term also sees Safer Internet Day on 5th February. We will be carrying out a unit of work on keeping safe online. In PSHE, the children will be learning about how to keep healthy. We will be working towards creating a performance of the Bob Marley song "Three Little Birds" in music, including using the glockenspiels to accompany our singing. After having a visiting Spanish teacher last term, this term we will begin to learn French, including the basic greetings, colours and numbers. PE days will be Wednesdays and Fridays and we will have both gymnastics and dance lessons.
Wednesday 6th February: Safer Internet Day
Wednesday 27th March/Thursday 28th March: Parent consultation evenings
SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD AT HOME
We have been very pleased with how many children are reading regularly at home and completing their homework and would like to encourage you to support your child with this as much as possible. Your child will be sent home with spellings and times tables to practise each week and we would like them to read at least 4-5 times a week at home. As your child becomes a more fluent reader, they may choose to do some of this reading independently, but it remains important for them to read to an adult at least once or twice a week so you can correct their mistakes and discuss the meaning of the text with them.
Your child also has a username and password for our digital learning platform, Purple Mash, which you should find a copy of inside their reading record. They can log on to the site at https://www.purplemash.com The children are mainly familiar with using the computing programs at school, but they are free to explore the site as they wish and there are many games to play, including some to support times tables.
